TINNITUS

What is Tinnitus?

People with tinnitus hear sounds that are not present in the external environment.  These sounds are usually described as ringing, buzzing, humming, whistling or “whooshing” noises.  Tinnitus is a symptom that in many cases can be related to a hearing problem, but there are cases where tinnitus is present with normal hearing.  Tinnitus does not cause a hearing loss, but may be a symptom of a hearing deficit.

What causes Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is not a disease, but may be a symptom of dysfunction of the auditory pathway. It can be caused by exposure to loud sounds, middle ear infections, high stress levels, alcohol, coffee, aspirin and certain medications can cause or exacerbate tinnitus. In very few cases a growth involving the hearing nerve and even wax on the eardrum.
